What is the nursing program at Western University in London, Ontario like?
I have been accepted to Western University for Nursing and I am confused about the clinical aspect of it. If anyone has taken this program and can explain it in more detail would be great. The booklet says that you are in clinical in first year and you visit families etc. I do not understand how that works. Do you do it alone? Do you visit these people at their homes? Do you get an address to thier homes and expected to get there? Do you have prior training before doing this and do you know what to do? Also how is the clinical done in a hospital and are there any hospitals nearby? I am very confused about this and what the clinical experience is like will determine where I will go to school. Also if anyone has taken this program do you like it? Thank you if anyone can give me an answer! Also I would like to know how many hours do you do your clinical and how many times a week.

From what I understand is this. You and a small group of your classmates will be assigned to a local hospital.. "local" can be within i believe 30 minutes and whichever hospital your school has a contract with. You will be responsible for driving to the hospital and from there you will be learning the ropes from the nurse in charge of you guys. Soon you will be taking care of patients with the nurses. In terms of visiting families, that is either at the hospital or if your program includes hospice care,, then it may be at a nursing home or their personal house. At this point you will either be alone or with another person. You will be expected to get there on your own. Your school will train you on the mannerisms. ALL nursing programs are like this so there is no way you can pick and choice from this aspect.

Clinical placements during nursing school take place in many settings including hospitals, nursing homes, mental health settings and the community.You are supervised at all times as a student so you wouldn't be sent anywhere on your own. if you were doing a home visit as part of a community nursing clinical you would go with the nurse preceptoring you.Clinical placements take place throughout the whole program and give you an opportunity to practice hands on skills with patients. Every school has it's own set up as to how often and how long. Usually you would be present for a whole shift ina hospital( mine were always 8 hours) and if you are on a day shift you will have to be a the clinical site early in the morning.
