moving to london

moving to london?
Hi. I am currently living in America and am going to attend college here to become a nurse. I have always wanted to live in London, I think its a fabulous place. I already know it is VERY expensive but I am only looking to buy a studio flat (yes, i know, still somewhat expensive) and live a fairly frugal lifestyle. Owning a car would be nice,bu by no means necessary. I would be fine using public transport. Many people have said the weather is horrid, but I actually enjoy cloudy and rainy. So my question is, is such a lifestyle within my reach? And also is there a demand for nurses in London? And do they accept American college graduates? Sorry for all of the questions, but I really want to do this. I am sorry. RENT is what i meant, not buy! This may sem like a dumb question, but how much cheaper is it to rent than buy a studio flat?

I see no reason why you can't do it... I also want to be a nurse, then move to Canada, which is also fairly expensive, with horrid weather... Good luck to both of us!!

In order to work in the UK you will need a work visa. To get one of these, as an American, you will need to find an employer to sponsor you and that employer will then need to prove to the relevant authorities that they can't source your particular form of labour from outside the EU. For most Americans, this is a problem, but nurses are always in demand here and there is a good possibility that you may well get a visa. However, I have to be honest in that you are severely overestimating your earning potential as a nurse. My cousin is a nurse and earns, at best, £20,000. With that sort of salary you won't be able to get a mortgage in excess of £100,000. With the prices of studio flats heading towards the £200,000 mark, it will be nigh on impossible to buy anything. With a nurse's salary you will almost certainly have to share a rented place with someone and owning a car isn't really that likely. Sorry if this isn't the answer you wanted but London is a lot more expensive than people realise. I mean, I'm a lawyer and even I can't afford a mortgage or a car!

SJM is right, now is certainly not the time to be buying, you should only consider renting until this recession is over. All banks in the UK have now stopped 100% or more mortgages and on a nurse's wage, that's probably what you'd need. You won't need a car in London, it's far too expensive and the tube and/or buses are just fine. As the majority of our nurses are immigrants from Asian countries who are willing to work for low wages, I suggest trying to be a private nurse in a private hospital or clinic who are far more likely to get better pay.

Are you dreaming? London is the financial capital of the world. It's a VERY expensive city, and the salary of a nurse can't buy you a new car, let alone a flat. Leaving that aside, you may have a chance of getting a job as a nurse, but we have plenty of folks from Asia who work in the hospitality industry. So your expertise may not be a huge demand in this country. Yes, they hire American college graduates, but you would have to pass a test to be a certified nurse in England.
